Preparing for State Testing
As we are approaching state testing for elementary students in grades 3-5, I wanted to share some ways that we are helping our students prepare at school as well as ways you can help prepare them at home. While state testing can feel stressful, especially for students taking it for the first time, a positive attitude and support system can help relieve some of the stress.
Here are some tips to help students approach the test with confidence:
Before the Test:
-
Get a good night’s sleep! A well-rested student will be ready to perform. Try to start bedtime routines a little earlier in the days leading up to the test.
-
Talk positively about the test. There are differing opinions about standardized tests, but like them or not, our school report cards are based on the tests, so we want our students to give their best effort and really show us what they know.
-
At school, students have taken practice tests so they are comfortable with different types of questions and how to arrive at the correct answers.
-
A healthy breakfast is key! Our school provides free breakfast to students everyday, including testing days.
During the Test:
-
Read directions/questions carefully! Some test questions might have more than one part, and it’s important for students to read and understand what they are being asked to do.
-
Use scratch paper! Many problems require multiple steps and are difficult to do in our heads. Students will be strongly encouraged to use scratch paper to work out problems and show their thinking.
-
Focus on effort! We always encourage students to try their best and have a positive attitude.
With all of us working together to support our students and following these testing tips, I am certain that our students will approach the test with more confidence and perform to the best of their abilities.
